You would be diagnosed with epilepsy if you are having recurring seizures. Every case of epilepsy is different as there are different forms and different levels of severity of epilepsy. So what happens to each person will depend on their case. They would likely put on some form of medication and may be sent for further tests and further appointments with their doctor will be made.

It is possible that someone can have epilepsy for all of their life. That is not always the case. People can have it for anything from a very short periods of time right through to having it all of their lives. This will be down to the kind of epilepsy they have and the causes. Everyone and every case is different, so each individual has to be assessed. Someone can have epilepsy for life, but have it controlled by medication, so it may not be a major problem for them.

For most of the time, nothing is happening and their life is perfectly normal. It is only when they have a seizure that something happens. At all times there is electrical activity in the brain. If something happens to disrupt this a person can get a seizure. So a seizure can be caused by what could be described as an electrical storm or power surge in the brain. When this happens the person will behave differently, maybe losing concentration for a few seconds or sometimes for longer. They may become unconscious or start to shake. As their brain is not functioning properly, they will act differently. This may only be for seconds or for a few minutes. There are many types of seizure and many levels of severity so what happens to an individual will depend on the type of epilepsy they have and how serious their seizures are. Some people have them very regularly, but there can be days, weeks, months or even years between a person's seizures.
