People cannot breathe underwater without assistance from oxygen tanks and rebreathers, or air pumps. It is currently impossible to draw enough oxygen out of water to sustain a human, so we rely on carrying the air down with us, or drawing it down from the surface on demand. Oxygen tanks can last multiple hours, but a pump system will operate as long as it has fuel.

It depends on how much you exercise, the more you exercise the more deep breaths you can take in at once. You have to use your time carefully when your under water, so have have more air to breath in.

On average 4-5 minutes. But what's important is the assignment at BUDs. You have to do a flip underwater and then swin 25m one way, and 25m back without pushing off the wall. It's not as bad as the rest of BUDs training so don't stress out too much if you're trying to be a SEAL. :)
