It was ptolemy that gave the assumption on the use of devices in the system of the universe
The Ptolemaic model says the the Earth is the center of the universe. As humans, we usually tend to think that we are the center of the universe and everything revolves around us.
Because they had always accepted it and there was no reason to change their ideas until the evidence was found. It was found, but long after Galileo's time.
People believed Ptolemy's theory for approximately 1400 years before it was challenged by Copernicus.
Firstly nobody knew any better, and secondly they risked the wrath of the church if they questioned it.
Ptolemy's calculations predicted the motions of the planets better than any other theory at that time. The predictions fit the observations that other astronomers made.
Because the theory had predicted the motions of the planets better than any known method at that time.
1,500 years :D
Ptolemy considered the solar system (and the universe) to be a set of crystal concentric spheres rotating around the stationary Earth at its centre. On the closest sphere was the moon, then Venus and so on out to the stars on the outer sphere. At the time they didn't have any idea how incredibly big everything is.
Nicolaus Copernicus's scientific ideas regarding the universe and specifically the idea of heliocentrism were at odds with the generally accepted ideas of his time. It was difficult for people to accept these new ideas, made even more difficult by the Catholic Church's powerful opposition to them for some time.
The church ordered Galileo to abandon the Copernican idea of heliocentrism because it conflicted with the prevailing biblical interpretation of a geocentric universe, where the Earth is the center of the universe. The church believed that this view would undermine the authority of the Bible and cause confusion among the faithful. Additionally, Galileo's advocacy for heliocentrism challenged the church's authority and power.
the notion that the earth was the centre of the solar system (and indeed the universe) was an assumption by ancient civilisations and all scientists seem to have agreed with this idea until Galileo Galilei noticed that this was not the case and published his idea but it was not instantly accepted because the bible was based on ancient ideas and as a result the roman catholic church attempted to stop the spread of this idea because it dissagreed with many of the verses in the bible. it was probaly this assumption that everything in the bible was true that made it take so long for anyone to think to question it. it is worth noting that Galileo was a devout catholic and was not trying to challenge the church.
He was charged with heresy, a serious crime in those days, for contradicting the church's belief that the Earth is at the centre of the Universe. The church said that if there was proof of this idea, they would have to have a rethink. But in court Galileo could produce no proof and he recanted. But later in the 17th century after Galileo's lifetime scientific discoveries led everyone to accept that the Sun is at the centre of the solar system (but not the Universe).
Its because he proposed the idea that the earth was not the center of the Universe, rather the sun was. This idea went against what the church had been saying.

That is more or less the idea of the - generally accepted - big bang theory.

It was called 'Geocentric.' The idea was that the Earth was the center of the universe and everything orbited around the Earth, including the Sun.
Materialism states that everything is in universe is matter and so it eliminates the idea of the existence of any spritiual or intellectural beings. This is considered to be a dangerous idea because undermines the power of the Church.

The big bang theory!...probably the most widely accepted theory... The idea is that all the matter in the universe was packed up into one tiny little particle and for some reason or another it just went BANG! and the universe just started expanding from there really...
Yes, for close to 1,400 years everyone believed the Earth was the center of the universe. It was not till 1543 that a man named Copernicus created a model with the sun as the center of the universe. The Catholic Church clung to the idea of the Earth as the center of the universe for over 90 years.

Redshift; the generally accepted explanation for the redshift of distant galaxies is that it is cosmological redshift, caused by the expansion of the Universe. This is somewhat related to the idea of the Doppler effect.
