The Grapes of Wrath takes place in the early thirties. In the few years bad farming and drought meant that 100,000,000 acres of prairie blew away in the "Dustbowls" of Oklahoma and Texas, reducing thousands of farmers to poverty. Thats why many packed up and went west.
