we just got the bugville butterfly house, and our caterpillars (painted lady) stayed in their cocoons for 12 days. it really depends on the type of caterpillar.
hope this helps.

Butterflies do not spin or make cocoons. Butterflies transform in a chrysalis instead.
From the time it becomes a chrysalis (pupa) until it emerges (ecloses) as an adult Monarch butterfly varies between 7 - 15 days. Hot summer days and nights speed the process and cooler spring or fall days/nights slow this process.
Butterfly life span varies greatly. Opler and Krizek in Butterflies East of the Great Plains, state that the "expected life span" (which is usually much shorter than the "maximum life span" because of predators, weather, etc.) ranges from about 2 to 14 days after they emerge from the chrysalis. Maximum life span ranges from about 4 days (spring azure) to 10 to 11 months (mourning cloak). Females generally live longer than males.
This depends on the type of butterfly, as they have different lengths of life cycles.
Some stay in a cocoon for up to a month.
22-32 days. Or it usually matters how good you have been taking care of them. it could be 2 weeks or maybe even 7 years.

a cocoon cant turn into a caterpiller because a caterpiller turns into a cocoon then turns into a butterfly
it takes about 10 to 14 days for a mourning cloak butterfly to get out of cocoon.
An inchworm will stay in their cocoon for about 2 weeks. They tend to stay in an extra week most of the time.
The butterfly's pupa stage is spent inside a cocoon
If The Cocoon Falls Down
First, the butterfly hatches as a worm. Then, the worm eats leaves to get fat, then it makes a cocoon. While in the cocoon, it transforms and goes through metamorphosis and soon emerges out of the cocoon as a butterfly.
A butterfly`s is called a chrysalis a moth`s is a cocoon.
Egg Caterpillar Cocoon Butterfly
depends on the type of butterfly. I have painted butterflies and there cocoon is about 2 in. where as a monach butterfly is considerably bigger.
If you disturb a butterfly cocoon, it can kill the growing insect inside. It is important to leave the cocoon alone to let it develop naturally.
