If there is an unmarried child that's reached 18, is a full-time high school student and lives with one of the parents, the parents will maintain their respective support if the child needs it, until the child completes the twelfth grade or reaches 19 years of age, whichever comes first. If the child becomes emancipated, the obligation to pay support ends. see link below for list on all states

Generally, the obligation ends when the child reaches 18 years of age.

The court has the discretion to order child support and educational expenses for children attending high school when the child is 18 or for 90 days after graduation.

Child support will not be awarded for a child 19 years or older. If the child suffers from disabilities that require care and expense, the court may award support until he or she reaches 21 years of age.

How long will I get child support for?

How long do I have to pay child support for?

In Massachusetts, child support can continue until the child is twenty-three (23). Except for the absolute maximum of age twenty-three (23), child support does not end upon a specific age but rather when the child becomes "emancipated." Emancipation in Massachusetts is defined in M.G.L. ch. 208 s. 28.

In basic terms child support in Massachusetts stops when the child turns age:

  • 18, unless the child is still principally dependent on the custodial parent (i.e. the child is no longer principally dependent if they've moved out of the home, except for college, is employed full time, is married, of has joined the military);
  • 21, unless the child is enrolled in a full-time undergraduate college program;
  • 23, no matter what.

The legal age of majority for the state is 18. In most instances that is the age when the non custodial parent is no longer legally responsible for financial support of the child/children. However, the terms of the current child support order are what actually determines whether or not payment can be ended when the child/children reach the age of majority.

You need to pay support until the child is 18 or until high school graduation. It depends on your divorce agreement. Some pay and also provide insurance coverage through college.
