Asters are very prone to a fungal disease. They start growing mid season and immediately start with fungal spores. I start spraying them for their fungus very early as a preventive. The fungal spray will not keep the fungus away but will keep it under control to some extent.

Plant a aster in full sun. They love it. I also plant something smaller and heat and sun tolerant right in front of it to hide the black stalks it will get from the fungus. The flower of the aster is beautiful but by the end of summer the stems are terrible. Plant something with color that will go well with the color of aster you are growing.
