Swelling occurs after a tough wisdom tooth extraction, especially if it was located in the lower jaw. The swelling reaches its maximum around the fourth day after the surgery and then slowly goes down for about a week.
After Surgery you should initially apply ice, then after 24 hours apply moist heat. This will help in reducing the swelling. Swelling usually appears the next day after surgery and is a natural process of healing. For the pain take the pain medicine prescribed by the surgeon.

∙ 16y agoTake something like Motrin or even Pamprin. You want something that is anti-inflamatory. If it has been over 24 hours, very gently swish with warm salt water also about 2-3 times a day. When I got my wisdom teeth pulled, he gave me a medicine for the swelling. I don't know if your dentist would do that for one regular tooth, but you could always ask him or her.

∙ 15y agoKeep a soft ice pack on your face and take Advil every four hours. You may feel like you look goofy but it does help the swelling.
