Traditionally it would take 10 or more years to become a Master Blacksmith. Most apprenticeships were for a four year period. Then you took pieces of your work before a group of Master Blacksmiths ( the Blacksmith Guild) and if they judged your pieces worthy and you knowledge sufficient you became a journeyman. .
