Well, I cannot tell what style you do so this is what the Tae Kwon Do belt order and time. (After the month means since you started.)

White Belt- You start with this.

Yellow Belt- Test after 3 months.

Green Belt- Test after 6 months.

Blue Belt- Test after 9 months.

Purple Belt- Test after 1 year.

Red Belt- Test after 15 months.

Brown Belt- Test after 18 months.

Deputy Black Belt- Test after 20 months.

Black Belt- Test a year after you go your Deputy Black Belt.

It depends entirely on how hard you work at it. Things vary from style to style and school to school. Our style has no time limits set on promotions. The only limits are for Dan rankings and you have to have studied for three years before you can test for black belt.

It takes a different length of time to earn the yellow belt at different Taekwondo schools. One school may test every three months and include a white belt with a yellow stripe between the white belt and the yellow belt. In that case, it takes six monthsto earn the yellow belt. Another school might test every six months and not include the white belt with the yellow stripe. In that case, it would also take six months to earn the yellow belt. Another school might organize their tests in another way.

It might take approximately one to two years to reach the brown belt, but the answer to this question will vary depending on the Taekwondo school, instructor, or organization. The use and order of belt colors are often different at each school.

While a student traditionally transitions from a beginner (white belt) to an expert (Black Belt) through a grading system that is fairly consistent throughout all Taekwondo organizations, each system of belt colors is different. Most rank structures typically contain 8 to 10 geup ("grades" - sometimes written as "gup" or "kup"). In early Taekwondo schools, there might have been only a few colors used, and each color belt may have represented two or more grades.

Colors such as white, yellow, green, brown, and black were very common. Some Taekwondo organizations later replaced the brown belt with a red belt, and others decided to use both, but with varying order. In some cases, the brown came first, and the red was the higher grade. In other schools, the red came first, and the brown was used as the higher grade. The important thing is not the color, but the geup (grade) that it represents.

Today, many Taekwondo organizations use a different color belt for each geup, although the choice of what colors, and their order will still vary. An example might be as follows:

White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Red-2, Red-1, Brown-2, Brown-1, Black.

or

White, Yellow, Gold, Orange, Green, Purple, Blue, Red, Brown-2, Brown-1, Black.

Promotion tests to advance from one grade to the next are typically held at intervals of either 1 month, 6 weeks, two months, or every three months. A beginner student might progress to an intermediate rank (IE: Green) after one year of consistent training (depending on the regularity of attendance, and ability of the student to pass each test). It will often take another year to become an advanced grade at around red or brown (depending on what colors are used).

Once a student has attained the higher belt grade, it could take an additional one to two years of advanced training before being eligible for the 1st Dan Black Belt (adult degree) or 1st Poom (Junior Black Belt under age 15).

The Kukkiwon in Seoul, South Korea sets a standard Taekwondo curriculum and certifies instructors, but only a Master (Kukkiwon 4th Dan or higher) has the authority to promote color belts in the Instructor's name, or recommend a Black Belt for Dan certification. However, the Kukkiwon only certifies Black Belt Dan and Poom ranks. The color belt geup system and time requirements are entirely up to the Master or Grandmaster to adjust at their discretion.

There are also many Taekwondo schools and organizations worldwide that are not affiliated with the Kukkiwon, so the color belt rank structure, and time requirements will vary in each school. It is best to ask your own teacher, or consult the guidelines set forth by your particular association or federation.

Short answer: three years. Long answer: it takes as long as it takes. Not all schools advance the same way, and not all students advance the same way, but generally, it takes three years to earn a black belt. Some schools require four years of study. Some schools require five years of study.

In Tagb taekwondo it takes a minimum 3.5 years.

Some schools might even offer accelerated advancement to students who start with a knowledge of another martial art.

Advancement in Taekwondo belt ranks or "geup" (grades) is not an exact timed event. It is entirely dependant upon the student learning what is required of the next grade level, and being able to demonstrate it or pass a test.

On average, the beginner ranks can be attained within one to three months. Higher belt ranks usually require a minimum of six months to one year each. However, regardless of the time past, the rank is only attained at the discretion of the Instructor based on the student's performance, knowledge, attitude, and adherence to the rules.

In principle, the student should not be focused on how long until the next belt, but rather the task at hand which is doing your very best at whatever your instructor is teaching you at the moment.

This all depends on your skill level, your teacher, and your perseverance on wanting to gain a black belt, but three years is a reasonable length of time.
