Basically the Birth Control pill takes anywhere from a month to three or four months, depending on how your body accepts the pill. Im sure about this if your on orthotricyclen lo. Not really sure about other birth control methods.

Birth control, at least the pill version, is only effective for the exact time you are taking it. It takes a month for the pill to take effect, but after that you have to continue taking it. If you miss your pill for 1 or more days, your chances of getting pregnant increase about 30% for ever day you miss! It is important to stay consistent, and take the pill about the same time every day. For a more hassle-free method, consider a hormone patch or an intra uterine device.

EDIT: It actually only takes two weeks for the birth control pill to take affect. Some even start working within the first week. Check with your doctor on yours.
