But prior to being president, he was a U.S. senator for one term, and an Illinois state senator for three terms.

So, he served as a senator (both state and federal) from 1997 to 2008.

∙ 11y agoHe was elected in November 2008 and officially took office in January 2009. His first term will end in November 2012, at which point he will either be re-elected to a second term or he will have completed four years as president. The most any president can serve is eight years.
