In name only, it was first labeled on April 11, 1955. The techniques and curriculum that has established Taekwondo as a unique martial art of Korea has been taught since the founding of the first Korean Kwan, Chung Do Kwan, in 1944 by Grandmaster Won-Kuk Lee. Although Taekwondo is constantly being molded to fit modern times as a living, adaptable form of self defense, the core substance of the art has been know to Koreans for more than 2000 years as it pertains to both philosophy and a blend of kicking, punching and grappling that was practiced among the trained soldiers of the three Kingdoms between 57 BC and the 1st century AD.
