One would assume they have a natural lifespan from about 20-40 years more in Zoos- in not-too-distant times some morons used to toss spent flashbulbs ( from now-obsolete camera flashguns) into the Hippo"s drinking water, which the stupid beasts drank and it ruptured their digestive organs- yecch. progress in Photography- higher speed films, strobe flashes- even digital have eliminated this man-made and rather inept (hazard).l

Hippos will stay in the water basically until the get hungry and needs to go ashore to eat.
Underwater, they'll usually resurface in about 5 minutes to breathe.
