If you were to read the books you would find that there are many details that are not covered. And since this epic story is so complicated, they need to put as much detail as possible into the movies to make people understand the stories. Myself being a Lord of the Rings fan, I love how long the movies are. They give much more detail and make much more sense than a regular hour and a half movie.
