It's directly under the old Prudential Building on the corner of Randolph St and Michigan Av. The bedrock on which the building rests is part of the Niagara Escarpment. I remember reading this in a brochure accompanying visits to the 40th floor observation deck back in the late 60s when the building was one of Chicago's tallest.
