It is common, but not normal. There are lots of reasons for that to happen. And a few different ways to stop it, but none that I know of can be done without seeing a doctor. You should talk to your parents or another trusted adult and go see a doctor. I think there is no real normal when it comes to your period. Every one is different. I never had a normal period. I would bleed for weeks sometimes and sometimes I would not bleed for months. I never had PMS when I was a teenager but after my first kid I knew it was coming well in advance. At your age your body is still changing a lot and maybe sometimes it just doesn't know what to do. When I was 17 I started taking the shot and it fixed all my problems. I've only had 6 periods in 8 years and that was when I quit my birth control to have my son.

Have you always had a fourteen day cycle, or did this just start happening? I have read that in the early stages of puberty, that it is normal for girls to have irregular periods. They usually regulate as you get older. Hormonal changes and stress can cause changes in your menstrual cycle. You need to go to a OB/GYN for an exam. You may also want to ask about Birth Control pills, which is commonly used to regulate irregular cycles.

You should see your doctor if:

  • you have not started menstruating by the age of 15, or by three years after breast growth began, or if breasts haven't started to grow by age 13
  • your period suddenly stops for more than 90 days
  • your periods become very irregular after having had regular, monthly cycles
  • your period occurs more often than every 21 days or less often than every 45 days
  • you are bleeding for more than seven days
  • you are bleeding more heavily than usual or using more than one pad or tampon every one to two hours
  • you bleed between periods
  • you have severe pain during your period
  • you suddenly get a fever and feel sick after using tampons
It's COMPLETELY normal. I'm 13 and I got my period when I was 11. For about a year after I had an irregular period. I would have it for two weeks, then never have it again for three more months. Now, I only have it for six to seven days once a month. I'm guessing you've just started, so just wait and keep the pads ready!

It depends on when you started. Because it takes a while for your body to get into a monthly routine. Another thing to consider is if you've had sex recently. If so pregnancy may be a possibility.
