A personal statement should be at least one-page long but the more the better. When describing about yourself, there's a greater chance of getting scholarships or into the school you want when you tell a lot.

Apex- short, about 250-500 words =]

None of these things sound like they'd make a great personal statement!

As long as its enough to explain well about what you would like to recommend..like this letter below..

Dear Sir / Madam

Re: Recommendation of Part-time Employment

I am writing to recommend Juanita Moreno for part-time employment as a housekeeper with your esteemed agency. I have known Juanita for 5 years as she served in her capacity as my housekeeper.

As she is seeking for some extra income and I do not need a full time housekeeper at the moment, I have allowed her to seek part-time employment and she has answered your advertisement for some part-time help at your agency.

Juanita is a hardworking and honest employee who is pleasant and picks up new skills quickly. You will be just as satisfied with her performance as I have been, if she were given the opportunity. Please feel free to contact me for further information on Juanita Moreno if necessary.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

Yours sincerely

Caryn Johnson

it doesn't really have to be too long this is a sample one:

Dear Mr. Smith:

Thank you for allowing me to visit you yesterday. I realize that this took time away from your regular responsibilities, and I am grateful for all the information that you were able to provide regarding your job at ACME.

Last night, I talked to my family about my experience at ACME. I became more convinced that I want to become an accountant. I am glad you gave us ideas about which classes we should take while in school. I plan to take more math and computer classes next year as you suggested.

Thank you again for giving me this valuable learning experience.

Sincerely,

Sam T. Student

There is no set rule how long a cover letter should be.
However many employment specialists recommend about two paragraphs.

  • A cover letter should include a short introduction and interest in the work ("Hello, I am ____ and I am very interested in working as a _____ for your organisation").
  • It should have a short paragraph explaining why you'll be good for the job ("I have work experience in similar roles, as you can see on my CV, I am loyal and... etc")
  • It should be signed with a kind gesture ("Thank you for considering me. Kind regards") and your full name.

Is it acceptable to have a typed signature for a recommendation letter and not a handwritten signature?

I would not recommend a typed signature on any letter unless you are sending it electronically. In all cases, a physical letter should have the actual signature of the sender. The recipient of a letter of recommendation that has a typed 'signature' will not hold the recommendation in high regard. A photocopy of a signed letter is preferable to a typed signature.
