How much in a week does a guinea pig have to come out of its cage?

We have our piggie out for hours at a time. She likes to curl up in a towel on our chest or somewhere along our body. I don't really see the need to keep them in a cage except for sleeping and eating.

∙ 13y agoLeave it alone, with food and water and stuff for 1 or 2 days. They need time to adjust to their new surroundings- don't stare at them or pet them or pick them up. Just let them relax and they will begin to feel comfortable soon.

∙ 11y agoEvery single day, maybe even multiple times a day. Unless their cage is exceptionally large, they need to come out every day. They need human socialization and will be very sad without it.

It depends how many guinea pigs you have. If you have 1 or 2 then I would recommend that you clean the hutch once a week. If you have more than three guinea pigs then you will have to clean it out pretty often!

It's best to keep them in the same cage for about a week. And you have to put them in the same cage together for about and hour each day after that for a while. I have 3 male guinea pigs at home and usually the guinea pig who came into the family or home first will try to show the other guinea pigs who is in charge (Or dominant). It usually takes about a week to two weeks for the guinea pigs to work it out and become great buddies.

No, I do not think so. It would have to be really, really dirty before it attracted anything. If housed in an appropriate sized cage, and if there is only one guinea pig, many guinea pigs can go two weeks without needing a cage cleaning. But this depends on the guinea pig. Some are very dirty and require alot more cleaning. Princess-jen says: Hi there. As i have a guinea pig myself i never leave a cage a week and a half. (mine is inside in a medium cage) i change newspaper and hay every two day etc... It would probably have to be very dirty as the other user has said. This really depends on how many piggies you have and whether its in winter/summer etc. in the summer i usually do it once a week or up to 10 days as they are only in it at nighttime. in the winter however, i do it at least once a week depending on how busy i am normally. If you can really start to smell them you obviously need to clean them out but be aware that male piggies tend to smell more than females anyway ( i have 2 males). i hope this helps you out a bit :D

while you can keep them out for a loooong time as long as they have food and water. but beware lol if you are holding them then they will pee on you usually if held for more then a half hour tops (at least my guinea pig lol). i almost always hold her with a towel because of this reason. without food or water i would say that you shouldn't keep them out for more then a couple hours (and yes if they are grazing grass counts as food and you can keep them out for at least up to 3 hours in this case). I'm not an expert so i would be careful. and remember if it is hot you should not leave your guinea pig outside unless it has a cool shaded place to go if it wants to and you should still not leave it out for more then half hour i would say if it is hot.
