Sam Houston was in Congress for four years, from 1823 to 1827.
Barbara Jordan was the first African American woman elected to Congress from the south. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 18th district of Texas in 1973.
He became the 8th Governor of Tennessee in 1827 and the 7th Governor of Texas in 1859.
Houston has never been the capital of Texas. WRONG!!! Before Texas integrated itself in to the union, and relinquished its domain over the chunks of Oklahoma Kansas Wyoming Colorado and about half of New Mexico that made up what was the Republic of Texas, five sites served as temporary capitals of Texas (Washington-on-the-Brazos, Harrisburg, Galveston, Velasco and Columbia) before president Sam Houston moved the capital to Houston in 1837. In 1839, the capital was moved to the new town of Austin by the next president Mirabeau B. Lamar. So, as far as I know, only once...
Columbia, what is now known as West Cloumbia was the capital before Houston. It was moved to Houston Because president Sam Houston ordered it to be moved December 15, 1836 and it started operating from Houston April 19, 1837. Hope this helps :)
