Grant was a general in the Union Army for 4 years from May 1861 to April 1865. Following the war he was a general in the US Army and appointed General of the United States Armies in 1866. He would remain a general until he became President of the United States in 1869.He also served briefly as Secretary of War in the Andrew Johnson administration.
