Once soldiers signed up, they were in it indefinitely. Some soldiers fought for up to three years. The style of warfare, along with indefinite lengths of service was tortuous. Even if a soldier managed to finish the war alive and unwounded, the mental stress of the war continued.

For US personnel, in the Army Air Force at the outset bomber crews were asked to complete 25 missions, but by the last year or so of the war this was increased to 35 as the opposition dwindled and better escorts enhanced the survival rate. Many volunteered for a second tour after finishing the first. Fighter pilots generally had no set amount of hours or missions. In the Navy, sailors sailed until victory or their ship was sunk. The Marine Corps did all its fighting in the Pacific, against the Japanese. A man who had survived three campaigns was sent home, for a time at least, though not discharged, so combat veteran Marines started getting rotated back to the states by mid 1944. There were more than 16 million Americans in uniform for WWII, and over half of these served in the US Army. For Army troops sent overseas there were only a few ways out - victory, death, incapacitating wound (or accident, or disease), or cracking up mentally. Even fairly seriously wounded men were hustled right back to the front as soon as they were just about healed, unless they had been permanently injured in some way that meant they could no longer perform as infantrymen. A very large number of WWII infantrymen had multiple awards of the Purple Heart.
