1946: The Eniac Computer is Unveiled

ENIAC (Electrical Numerical Integrator And Calculator) was originally developed during Word War II to perform complex trajectory calculations for artillary, but the war ended before the machine was operational. But it continued to be used after the war, performing calculations for the design of the hydrogen bomb, weather prediction, cosmic-ray analysis, thermal ignition, random numbers, and wind-tunnel design. The ENIAC contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, along with 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, 1,500 relays, 6,000 manual switches and 5 million soldered joints. It covered 1,800 square feet of floor space, weighed 30 tons, and consumed 160,000 Watts of electrical power, making the lights go dim in Philadelphia each time it was powered up. On October 2, 1955 the ENIAC was shut down for the last time, but by then inventors John Mauchly and John Presper Eckert had already had the UNIVAC computer on the market for several years.

the answer is 1946.

The first ENIAC demonstration system (2 panels) was turned on in June 1944, the first time the complete ENIAC system was turned on was early November 1945. ENIAC ran continuously for 2 months (December 1945 through January 1946) on a fusion bomb simulation for Los Alamos. ENIAC was revealed to the press and public in February 1946.

Depends on how much of ENIAC, the first demonstrator composed of just 2 panels was turned on and running in June 1944, a useable system with all 20 accumulators was turned on and running in September 1945, the complete system was first turned on as a system in early November 1945. Here is the timeline:

  1. The cycling unit and one accumulator were completed and turned on in June 1944.
  2. The initiating unit, remaining 19 accumulators, and function tables were completed and turned on in September 1945.
  3. The multiplier and divider/square rooter were completed, added to the system and turned on in October 1945.
  4. Final assembly and turn on of the complete ENIAC was early in November 1945.
  5. John von Neumann used ENIAC through December 1945 and January 1946 to simulate Edward Teller's "Classical Super" fusion bomb design; proving it unworkable due to excessive radiative heat loss.
  6. ENIAC was revealed to the press and public in February 1946.

Only one ENIAC computer was built. It consisted of a number of units wired together, and needed to be rewired to be reprogrammed. However, after 1948 a number of improvements were made to the original ENIAC computer

Only one was built. It is now on display in multiple pieces in various museums across the US and in other parts of the world.

As an interesting bit of trivia, in the mid-1990s, a modern design CPU was constructed to emulate the functionality of the ENIAC and it was built to be only about 5 millimeters by 7 millimeters in size. Compare this to the ENIAC itself which required almost as much room as a 4-bedroom house.

The eniac was built to be used during what?

ENIAC was designed and built in WW2 for the following purposes:Calculate new firing tables for existing artillery pieces in use where existing tables were found inadequateCalculate firing tables for new artillery piecesIt had to be able to do this much faster than the existing human computers then used for these tasks. However ENIAC was not operational until after the end of the war.

English.

Was the eniac computer the first computer to be created?

No, the following digital computers preceded ENIAC: Harvard Mark I, ABC, Zuse Z1 & Z2 & Z3, Colossus Mark 1 & Mark 2. Also many analog computers preceded these. However ENIAC was the first general purpose programmable electronic digital computer.

Who built the computer that was on display at the Simthoin in 1984 Its made up of simiconductors and micochips If it was built like todays computers it would be the size of NYC?

The only exhibit at the Smithsonian that had to do with computers was the ENIAC, a simple google search will pull up the wiki entry along with the museum website.
