Somewhere between 16,000 and 20,000 Mormons fled Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846 and 1847. It is nearly impossible to count exactly how many fled, as many stayed behind for months or years in an attempt to sell their property for a fair price, and still others stayed because they did not agree with the leadership of Brigham Young.

Although I've never heard of anything called the "Mormon war" I can only assume you're referring to the religious persecution that the LDS church went through in that period. After they were chased out by mobs and militia, the Mormon settlement of Nauvoo, Ill was more or less destroyed, but not entirely. Mainly the farms and homes of the Mormons who refused to leave were burned. Once they left, the Mormon temple that stood there was also burned to the ground. The city exists today and the temple was recently rebuilt by the LDS church. However, Nauvoo is not the commercial hub that it once was. (at the time, it was as important to commerce as Chicago and other industrial cities.)
