The NLCS winner and ALCS winner compete to the best of 7 games in the World Series. Games are played until one team has won 4 games. That means that teams can play anywhere from 4-7 games in a complete World Series.

The first World Series in 1903 was a best of 9 game series in which the Boston Americans and Pittsburg Pirates faced off. The series ended in 8 games, of which the Boston Americans won 5. Like the 1903 World Series, the 1919, 1920, and 1921 World Series were all best of 9 game series. The rest were the best of 7, as played today.
