In the epic Naval air battle- Japan lost four Aircraft Carriers- the USN lost one ( accounts differ, either the Lexington or the Yorktown). Of course smaller vessels such as destroyers may well have been caught in the line of fire- Midway is notable as the first Naval Battle largely conducted by aerial elements- from Carriers of course. Code interception played a vital role. The total ship losses from the Battle of Midway were:United States: carrier Yorktown and destroyer HammannJapan: carriers Hiryo, Soryu, Kaga, Akagi and heavy cruiser MikumaIn addition, the prior Battle of Coral Sea was the first major action where ships never saw each other and combat was conducted solely by aircraft. And codebreaking, while critical to the initial confirmation of an attack on Midway, played no role in the actual battle itself.
