It depends on the shelter. Some are small while others are large. It can also depend on events in the area. When there is a major weather event there can be more dogs than normal or during the 4th of July period dogs get lost due to the fireworks. Types of dogs will also vary according to area. I know my area is over loaded with Chihuahuas.

∙ 15y agoThere is no way to answer that question, as there is no single overseeing govermental agency for animal control in the US. Most animal shelters and animal control agencies are not linked and may not even be managed or contracted by city, county or state offices to control local animal populations. Dependent on budget and regulatory oversite, accurate record keeping many not even exist. At this time, it is not even known how many animal sheltering organizations exist in the US.
Estimates vary widely, but per the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, it is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States. The true number is probably higher, if one would account for areas that have no animal shelters in place, and rely on police, vets, or other agencies to control animal populations. Additionally, some people kill animals (drowning litters of kittens, etc.) rather than take them to shelters to be humanely.

Answer B: They only kill animals if they don't get adopted and there is not enough room for anymore animals. It's really sad if you think about it... random animals getting killed beacause they can't fit in a room.... stupid animal abusers... they don't know what they are doing. If they were an animal, would they like it if I threw them in front of a car? I DON'T THINK SO!!! HELP STOP ANIMAL ABUSE!!! There are sadly tons and tons of shelters that humanely euthanize (Usually it is an injection into a vein) animals after a certain length of stay. There are so many animals that are going into shelters than there are being adopted. However there are also no kill shelters that will keep an animal as long as it takes to find it a home. If you have to bring an animal to a shelter please find out if it is a no kill shelter if it is find somewhere else that isn't.
