On paper, one thousand usually, on both sides. These would be in ten companies of one hundred men each, each company commanded by a captain, usually elected by the men of the company. There was also a regimental staff of a few officers and enlisted men. Regiments were commanded by a colonel, with a lieutenant colonel second in command, and a major as third.

But in the early days of the war as companies were created in every little county seat town across both north and south, they were then collected at some bigger town and "regimented" together when ten were on hand to make a regiment. Then, they would have to be "put through the fevers". These men were almost all farm boys who had never been anywhere, and had never been exposed to childhood diseases, like measles or mumps. They got typhoid fever and typhus and dysentery too, from bad water, and small pox and scarlet fever. So as many as half of every new regiment would die or have to be discharged for medical reasons. Then when they started fighting they would lose more men. By late in the war a regiment might have three or four hundred men, and count itself strong. There was little systematic effort to bring in new recruits to replace lost men. Governors of states got to appoint colonels when new regiments were made, and this was a good source of political patronage, so instead of filling up old regiments, new ones were always being formed.
