Over 1.6 million African Americans moved from the rural south to the North during the Great Migration of 1910 to 1930. Another migration period occurred from 1940 to 1970 relocating about 4.5 million African Americans to the Northeast, Midwest, and West.

In the 1800's, the United States was split between the North and South. The North was antislavery, while the South was proslavery. African Americans in the South worked in plantations as slaves. When the chance came to escape, they escaped to the North, where they could be free. Once there, they could work in factories. In order to escape, they either went in the Underground Railroad or they travelled on their own. Sometimes slave catchers went into the North to capture runaway slaves. This outraged many abolitionists.

Some famous African Americans are Harriet Tubman, the 'conductor' of the Underground Railroad, Frederick Doulgass, Nat Turner, and John Brown.
