That depends on how the keystrokes are stored.
If the ascii or scan code is stored, it's one byte per keypress. Some Chinese input systems using unicode can use up to 4 bytes per keypress.
A character can take either one, two, or for bytes depending on teh coding standard you are using. Most common these days is Unicode, in which a character takes two bytes.
A keystroke initially takes six bytes, three to indicate that a key has been pressed and three to indicate it has been released. This is refined internally to the computer as a single character, so the raw keycodes are seldom seen.
For the purpose of measuring typing speeds in words per minute, a word is considered to be 5 characters.
One byte (8 bits) is the number of bits used to encode a single character of text (this is not true for Japanese and Chinese "kanji" characters which take a multiple of bytes to encode).

Key strokes per minute is a far more accurate way of measuring the speed of someone typing. Words can be 1 to fifteen or more letters, that makes a difference. Examples:- "I" counts as one word and it counts as one keystroke. "contraindicated" would count as only one word, but it counts as fifteen keystrokes.
6000 keystrokes per hour (kph) = 6000/60 keystrokes per minute or 100 keystrokes per minute. The average word length in the English language is 5.1 letters. Add one space after each word, which makes it 6.1 keystrokes per word. That gives 100/6.1 = 16.4 words per minute (wpm), without allowing any keystrokes for punctuation.6000 keystrokes per hour (kph) = 6000/60 keystrokes per minute or 100 keystrokes per minute. The average word length in the English language is 5.1 letters.
