That depends on many factors, if you really need an amount of oatmeal in ounces yo are better off getting a scale. It's always handy if you are in to baking.
Each cup contains 8 ounces. Therefore, the answer is 42/8 = 5-1/4 cups!

How many ounces of dry cereal is in a cup?

It depends on the brand and type. Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, for example, weighs more per cup than their plain Kellogg's Corn Flakes. You really need to conduct experiments with various brands of dry cereal to answer this question definitively. Using a measuring cup or beaker, you could carefully measure out 8.5 fluid ounces of each cereal and weigh each sample, and then find their average. (It might be easier to measure exactly EIGHT ounces -- not 8.5 -- for the experiment.) BTW, a cup of Kellogg's Corn Flakes weighs just one ounce (28 grams). A cup of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes weighs 1.43 ounces, which is 43 percent heavier per cup.
