Nelson Mandela was arrested 5 August 1962 and released from prison 2 February 1990. Pro-apartheid South African president, P.W. Botha, had a stroke in 1989 and Botha's replacement, Frederik Willem de Klerk, freed Mandela. Botha had once offered Nelson Mandela release from jail in 1985, but only on the condition that Mandela would stop the armed conflict. Nelson Mandela chose to stay in prison as he believed it was the right thing to do in order to put an end to apartheid.
Mandela only served one year he refused the second time. Eventually they won the battle to stop discrimination for the blacks, so i guess that he refused the second time because he didnt want to. Also in jail he spreaded the messegaes of discrimination.
Nelson Mandela had great trouble juggling both family life and the injustice and needs of an entire country. He couldn't be the farther for his daughter because he was the farther to the world. Also being in jail for 27 years didn't help his second marriage stay intact.
While he was in jail for 27 years, he enjoyed reading and the guards allowed him to stay up late just to read. He was also obviously interested in politics as he owned his own law firm with Oliver Tambo, a fellow ANC colleague and a close friend in 1952 after he qualified as a lawyer.
