How many days did it take Columbus to reach America?

Columbus had expected Japan to be about 3000 miles away, which with his ships would have taken one month, so when he reached America after 31 day, naturally it was sensible to assume the he had reached Asia. It was not till later that people found out that the distance from Europe sailing west to Asia was about 4500 miles.
