# Electric # Fretless # Acoustic # Semi-acoustic # 5-string, 6-string, 7-string (single strings) # 8-string (four double courses in octaves) # 12-string (four triple courses; one bass string and two unison octave strings) # Baritone guitar (short-scale electric 6-string bass tuned between guitar and standard bass) # Piccolo bass (medium-scale 4-string bass tuned an octave up for solo work) # Ashbory bass (extra-short-scale fretless with silicone rubber strings) # MIDI bass controller # 1-string, 2-string, 3-string (made by Atlansia as well as custom makers) There are probably others, but that's a dozen off the top of my head.

Most popular bass Guitars are jazz bass and precission bass, most basses are of these kinds, just like most popular guitars are telecaster, stratocaster, les paul and sg.

P Bass and J Bass are the most used for begginers, the second being famous for its warmth sound, the first being known for its more aggressive tune, another major type of basses are those with active pre amp, these have special controllers on the bass to make it have many sound types, however, its a matter of taste, as some people really dislikes this kind of basses and rather like passive ones.

There are many other kind of basses, and modifications of the J and P. For example, there are basses meant for slapping, others for tapping, others that doesnt have frets, basses that combine pickups from different styles, basses with a wider tonal range thanks to extra frets or extra strings, basses with a different tonal range from the common E A D G, basses with special tuners to automatically drop the E string to D, there are as many basses as styles are on music.
