There are 264 known species of monkey that are not yet extinct.
Monkeys usually fall into to main categories, whether they are primates from the Old World or the New World. Those from the New World are from the Americas (South and Central) and there are about 13 types. There are about 6 types from the Old World (Africa and Asia) and these include about 135 species.

Any members of the New World monkeys or the Old World monkey are considered to be monkeys. This means that there are 264 different species.

New World monkeys include the families:

  • Cebidae - This includes Marmosets, tamarins, Capuchins and Squirrel Monkeys and houses 56 species in total.
  • Aotidae - This includes Night Monkeys, Owl Monkeys and Douroucoulis and only houses 8 species.
  • Pitheciidae - This includes Titis, Sakis and Uakaris and houses 41 species.
  • Atelidae - This includes Howler monkeys, Spider Monkeys and Woolly Monkeys and houses 135 species. This is the largest of the new world monkeys families.

Old World monkeys belong to the families Cercopithecidae and houses 135 species.
