12, please dont listen to the person before me who said 14. they are crazy, or missinformed.

Another answer:In the strictest sense, there were twelve apostles. However, the New Testament also applies the term "apostle" in a broader sense.

At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus hand-picked twelve men who would become His apostles. Of those twelve, one (Judas Iscariot) betrayed Jesus and afterward hanged himself (Acts 1:18). This left eleven men who awaited the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem; their names are listed in Acts 1:13 - Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.

Matthias was chosen to replace Judas in Acts 1:26, bringing the total number of apostles back to twelve - but technically, Matthias was the 13th man to be named an apostle.

Then in Acts 14:14, Barnabas and Paul are bothcalled apostles: But when the apostles Barnabas and Paulheard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out

Not to take away from the significance of the TWELVE (because the number is significant: Revelation 21:14), in the broad use of the term, the New Testament refers to a total of 15 men as apostles. In fact, since "apostle" means "a delegate, a messenger, one sent forth with orders," Jesus Himself is once referred to as an Apostle, for His role as a delegate - one sent forth with a mission and message from God.

There were at least 19 Apostle's

The word "apostle" means "to send forth".

Jesus originally picked twelve (Mat. 12:2-4).

Matthias was picked to replace Judas (Acts 1:22). #13

Paul was an Apostle (Acts 14:14) #14

Barnabas was an Apostle (Acts 14:14). #15

James the brother of Jesus was an Apostle (Galatians 1:19). #16

Andronicus and Junia were Apostles (Romans 16:7) #'s 17 & 18

Christ was considered an Apostle as well (Heb. 3:1) which makes #19

The 70 that Jesus sent out (Luke 10:1) were disciples, but not Apostles though the original 12 Apostles were included in that number.

According to 1Cor. 1:1 & 9, to be an Apostle you must have seen the Lord, and been called to be one directly by Him.

There are other interpretations to who is being called an Apostle

Answer

12 was a very important number in Jewish culture. 12 signified 'perfection'. Part of the reason that 12 was special was that it is the smallest number that has a great number of factors (eg 1,2,3,4,and 6 all divide into 12 with no remainder. No other small number has so many factors).

As a result, 12 was used as a 'perfect' number - such as 12 symbols of the zodiac, 12x2 hours in the day, 12x5 seconds to the minute and minutes to the hour, 12 tribes of Israel and so on. In Revelation, the number in heaven is stated as "144,000" - ie 12 X 12 thousand. In other words, the number is not a literal number but signified a perfect multitude.

Jesus did not only have 12 close disciples, but he also had an inner group of intimate friends Peter, James and John (3 = a quarter of 12) and also a larger group of 72 adherents (half of 12 X 12). After Jesus' death Judas killed himself leaving just 11 disciples. After the resurrection and ascension, the disciples then agreed that the 12 should be restored, and so the replacement disciple, Matthias, was elected to take Judas' place, restoring the number to the perfect 12.

Jacob fathered 12 sons. They are the ancestors of the tribes of Israel, and the ones for whom the tribesare named. Each occupied a separate territory
