Texas has been a state with massive growth and its 38 electoral votes places it second only to California. Although originally a solidly Democratic state, it switched to Republican in 1980 with the choice of George H. W. Bush as Reagan's running mate. Texas would stay Republican as Bush or his son would be on the Republican ticket for most of the following elections.
