According to statistics from 2009, about 3,000,000 - 4,000,000 dogs of all ages were adopted per year. I am not exactly sure how many of those were puppies, but it was probably a lot (people like to get dogs as puppies).
According to a 2010 ASPCA survey: In America, Four million cats and dogs are euthanized each year- one every eight seconds- and out of every three dogs that are abandoned in a shelter, one of them gets adopted and two are euthanized. :'(
