The number of eggs they can lay varies from 30 to 500 eggs. It may take somewhere around several minutes to hours to lay the eggs. After the mating process, the male bettas will start taking the eggs and place them on the bubble nest. The female betta needs some recovery time after laying eggs.

Flying fish typically produce hundreds or even thousand of offspring each year. Most of these do not survive very long and end up falling prey to other, larger fish.

This is true for most fish, which with very few exceptions, are oviparous and produce thousands of eggs in one laying so at least some of the fry do survive to adulthood..

What are salmon eggs called?

All the fishes lay eggs. The female fishes spawn eggs during the breeding season and the eggs are competitively fertilized by male fishes. The fertilization is external (takes place outside the body) using water as medium. Most of the eggs are microscopic and hence cannot be visualized. The larval stages released from the egg constitute the zooplankton.

Why aren't oceans and lakes overcrowded with fish if female fish lay thousands of eggs?

Fish and their eggs are prevented from overpopulation through multiple methods of population control. Aquatic environments can be difficult to survive in for animals such fish, therefore some may get sick or die of other natural causes. In any kind of environment, there are carnivores that must hunt other animals. In aquatic environments some examples of carnivores include sharks, alligators, crocodiles and even fish like piranhas. They rely on eating animals such as fish and their eggs for survival.

What do living things do to ensure that their own kind lives on?

Animals ensure the survival of their species by taking care of their eggs and young. This is called reproduction. For example, turtles and snails lay many eggs so that if some of the eggs get eaten, there will be more left. Frogs lay slimy eggs. All mammals give birth except for the platypus and the spiny anteater which is also known as the echidna which is mostly found in Australia. Most young are born alive. Some animals also hide their eggs. For an example, a snail hides it's eggs under rocks while butterflies hide theirs under leaves. Snakes coil their eggs but when the eggs are hatched they are very independent.
