It depends on the atomic number. For example, to find the number of electrons in carbon, look at a Periodic Table. You will see that the atomic number for carbon is 6, so 6 electrons orbit a carbon atom'snucleus.

This is a fairly simple question, but only if you know the facts before you start. First before I give the answer, I should give a mini lesson on atoms. First thing you need to know is that all atoms have an equal number of protons and electrons unless they are ions. Ions are elements which have lost electrons from their orbit by an external energy. The number of protons is also the atomic number. To calculate the number of neutrons, you must subtract the mass number from the atomic number and this gives you the number of neutrons in the nucleolus.

Nitrogen has 7 electrons, 7 protons and 7 neutrons.

There are 2 electrons that orbit the nucleus of Helium. The atomic number next to each element of the periodic table tells you how many electrons a single atom of the element contains. Helium's atomic number is 2.

Hope this Helps!
