It is faster, in terms of time, to go the southern route that takes you through Vegas and up the I-15. From Fresno the trip, including food stops and bathroom breaks for a family of four, took 13 hours. Drive time would be less. If you take the northern route is best to take in the summer, because of donner pass being blocked by snow. It is fewer miles however you do drive through mountain passes and some nasty curved roads. It's more scenic but not as fast.

It would all depend on the city in California that you are driving from. I live in Utah , and can tell you that from Huntington Beach,CA to Salt Lake City, Ut it is 10 hours driving straight there. 4 hours to Las Vegas and then 6 hours from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City.

The question is too vague to answer as you wrote it. If you live in Dorris, California, the Oregon state line is five minutes away. If you live in San Diego, it's two days of driving to Oregon.
