One lap is usually seen as there-and-back, so a lap is twice the length of the pool. So a lap in a 50 m pool is 100 m. One km is 1000 meters. 1000 / 100 = 10

10 laps in a 50 m pool is 1 km.

If you want it in lengths, then 1000 / 50 = 20

20 lengths makes 1 km.

That's the wonderful thing with the metrical system. One kilometer is the same as 1000 meters. Hence it takes 1000/25=40 laps to swim a kilometer.

It depends on how long the pool is, most Swimming Pools are either 25m or 50m long thus 1km (or 1,000m) will be 40 lengths in a 25m pool and 20 lengths in a 50m pool
