No. 1900 is not a leap year.

In the Gregorian calendar, the calendar used by most modern countries,

the following criteria determine which years will be leap years:

  1. Every year that is divisible by four is a leap year
  2. Of those years, if it can be divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless the year is divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

According to the above criteria, that means that years 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are NOT leap years, while year 2000 and 2400 are leap years.

There were 25 leap years between 1900 and 2000:

1904, 1908, 1912, 1916, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000.

The rule for determining leap years is:

- A year is a leap year if its last two digits are between "04" and "96" and it's divisible by 4.

- An end-of-century year (ending in "00") is a leap year only if it's divisible by 400.

Thus 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years but as many of us remember 2000 was a leap year.

The reason for this strangely complicated rule is that the earth takes roughly 365.23 days to go around the sun. If it were exactly 365.25 the calculation would be simple, but those little bits of 0.02 days add up over time. They gradually over-count how many days have passed and have to be removed from the calendar every so often.

No.

The rules for leap years are a bit complex. The actual length of the Earth's orbit around the Sun is 365.24 days. So if you simply assume that the year is 365 days, your calendar will be one day off every four years. After 100 years, your calendar will be 20 days out of sync with the seasons.

To keep the calendar in near-perfect synchronization with the seasons of the year, we add one day to the calendar every 4 years. In year numbers that are evenly divisible by 4, we add one day; February 29. This would work if the year were 365.25 days in length, but that's not QUITE accurate. So in year numbers that are evenly divisible by 100, we skip the leap year - unless the year number is evenly divisible by 400.

So century years like 1800 or 1900 are not leap years, while years divisible by 400, like 2000, _ARE_ leap years.

This pattern will keep the calendar synced with the seasons within 1 day for the next 23,000 years.
