Ideally, you should have at least one litter box per cat, plus an extra one. This isn't always feasible for every cat-owner, of course, and it also depends a great deal on the behaviours of the cats involved. Some cats don't mind sharing a litter box, while others absolutely will not do so; some cats won't even urinate and defecate in the same box, and require two! It can be a matter of some trial and error.

As many cats as you want. But don't get so many that you cant afford to pay for them, because then you will have to sell some and you will be sad. Also make sure you can find time for every cat, so don't get 10 if you are only home for a few hours each day. I recommend that you get 1 or 2 cats, and if you can take care of them and want more gradually add cats to your household until you don't want any more or can afford to care for any more.

The real limit here is how many can you take care of? Cats are not entirely trouble-free, they get sick and need to be nursed back to health on occasion; and the more cats you have in a relatively confined space, the more likely a disease is to be passed from one to another. Also, litter and food are not free, and litter boxes must be cleaned regularly -- usually daily. For an adult in good health, probably the maximum reasonable number of cats to the household is six; for a senior, probably one or two is about the limit. Check also with local laws; some municipalities require a license or zoning variance if you intend to keep more than a certain number, often five.

You should usually have one litterbox per cat because they may not want to use "that" litterbox once another cat has used it.

Do you have to clean a cats litter box every day?

It depends on: how many cats you own, and the number of litter boxes you own. The pet stores and adoption centers advise you to have one box for each cat, plus one more. You need to clean them every 3-5 days depending on the circumstances listed above. Answer I have two cats, who willingly share one box. I use scoop away and so clear the clumps every 2-3 days, adding litter as needed. You definitely need a litter with good odor control and willing cats!

What causes litter box smell?

They do stink (if you don't clean them). Especially covered litter boxes tend to stink less as the odor gets trapped inside. There are also self cleaning litter boxes, they tend to stink less as they automatically clean the litter after 20 seconds.
