I'm not sure if you're supposed to, but I have. (Hint - Mini chocolate chips are GREAT in cupcakes!) I put them in the batter just before pouring it into the pan to bake in. When I took the cake / cupckaes out, the chocolate chip provided a ncie surprise inside.
