Spring: gestation is about 11 months, and the estrous cycle normally occurs in the spring and summer, to prevent mares from foaling in harsh winters.

However, a mare can actually give birth at any time of the year. Spring happens to be the most ideal--not to mention popular--time of year that they would give birth in.
