In the Northern Midwest winter tends to be more like 4-6 months...Sometimes starting late September, early October, and lasting until late April to early May. The coldest Month is normally January. Now this does vary depending on where you live.

The actual period of winter in the northern hemisphere is 21 December through 21 March. In the Southern Hemisphere, winter is from 21 June through 21 September, while the northern hemisphere is experiencing summer.

Generally speaking, most people in the northern hemisphere think of winter as being in December, January and February while in the southern hemisphere, many people consider winter to be in June, July and August.

In fact in Australia (at least) winter officially begins on 1st June and ends on 31st August.

At any one place, only three months are considered to be winter. Winter is from the winter solstice to the spring equinox; in the northern hemisphere, this is approximately from December 21 or 22, to March 20 or 21. In the southern hemisphere, winter is from June 20 or 21, to September 22 or 23. (The exact date may vary from one year to another.)
