The simple answer is 8 neutrons. But this depends on which oxygen isotope you are talking about. Oxygen-16, the most abundant oxygen isotope, has 8 neutrons.

Not all oxygen atoms have the same number of neutrons. However, the very large majority have 7 neutrons (some have slightly more or less than that).

Number of neutrons = Atomic Mass of an isotope - atomic number (number of protons) The most important stable isotope of oxygen is 16O (99.76 % in the mixture of natural oxygen isotopes); this isotope has 8 neutrons.

Normally, 8.

But, different isotopes, an element with a different numbers of neutrons than usual, have different numbers of neutrons.

The 3 isotopes of oxygen are oxygen-16, the most common, oxygen-18, the second most common, and oxygen-17, the least common. 16 has 8 neutrons, 18 has 10, and 17 has nine.

to get the amount of neutrons in an atom, you have to subtract the atomic mass- in this case 16- by the number of protons, in other words the atomic number, which is 8. as an answer you get a total of 8 neutrons in an oxygen atom.

16

There are 8 protons (so 8 is the atomic number), + 8 neutrons (so 16 is the atomic mass)
