The "Jewish Bible", is called the Tanakh and it is divided into three main parts. The first is called, Torah (Teaching), the second is the Nevi'im (Prophets) and the third is the Ketuvim (Writings.) The Torah consists of the first five books, referred to as the "Five Books of Moses". The Nevi'im consists of eight books. The Ketuvim are sometimes also known by the Greek title "Hagiographa" and it consists of eleven books. Giving the modern Tanakh a total of 24 books (in the past Ruth was considered part of Judges, and Lamentations was part of Jeremiah making it 22 books.) The famed first century Jewish historian, Josephus said, "For we have not an innumerable multitude of books among us, disagreeing from and contradicting one another, as the Greeks have, but only twenty-two books, which contain the records of all the past times; which are justly believed to be divine."

Jewish tradition (Talmud, Bava Batra 14b) states that the prophetic books were written by the authors whose names they bear: Joshua, Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, etc. Judges is credited to Samuel, Kings was written by Jeremiah. The Prophets contain a total of 8 books according to the Jewish count.
