During 2012, an approximate of 75 people died of intentional homicide each day. This may seem a lot if you compare it to say, the United States (3 murders per day). But in general terms, Mexico is much safer than say, Brazil (113 murders per day), or India (118 murders/day).

These murders however, are unevenly distributed; northern cities such as Juarez, Tijuana or Monterrey are the highest in number of victims. For example, during 2011, more than 1608 people died on Juarez alone (five per day) and such city is regarded as the second most dangerous in the world. On the other hand, cities such as Cozumel, Merida and Huatluco didn't have any murders throughout the entire year. Even complete regions such as Yucatan, Chiapas or Oaxaca report less than 20 murders per year in their territories.

On average 55 people are murdered in Mexico each day; you have to consider however, that this statistic is quite misleading as Mexico is a large country (113 million). For example, the United States wouldn't be much better with 41 murders per day while the most dangerous country in the world (Honduras) has only 17 murders per day.

The statistic used for these matters is the number of homicides per 100,000 people. This can give you a better estimate on how many people get killed by their peers; Mexico would have 14 murders per 100,000 inhabitants while the US as a whole would have only 4.8 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. Honduras would have 78 murders per 100,000 people, making it the most dangerous country in the world.

An approximate of 2.14 people die each day due to intentional homicide. This puts Mexico City as a much safer place than say, the overall United States (3 homicides per day).
